year of the horse

February has started off as quickly as a thoroughbred anticipating the race gate to open.  Happy Chinese New Year!  It's officially the Year of the Horse.  One of my favorite creatures on this planet.   They are so gentle, yet strong, loving and magnificent.  Horses are healing.  I could take their photos for the rest of my life every day.  I love to be around them, even muck stalls.  Last winter into July, we helped a friend with her three Percherons, a mule and a Fresian.  Every morning, we would muck stalls, change the water, haul some hay and sweep the barn.  I'm not kidding, it was the best part of my day.  I just love the smell of horses.

So what's in store for this year?!

Horse year is considered a fortunate year that brings luck and good things. Magical Horse has supernatural powers, is heroic, strong, and can even fly! A white celestial cloud Horse is sacred to the Chinese Goddess Kwan Yin. Her white Horse flies through the heavens, bringing peace and blessings…”

I have wanted to work with Paige for over a year now.  I've known her since she was in high school and now she is a successful business owner at After Glow Tanning & Beauty Bar in Avon, CT.  I found the perfect vintage bridal gown at FAVARH Thrift Shop in Canton, CT.  It's my favorite place to shop and it benefits so many people.  I've also wanted to work with Cheryl Picard Reeves horses at Spirit Horse Therapeutic Riding Center of Canton.  She is a sweetheart and kind soul that runs a program to help children with disabilities, victims of abuse/violence, battered women, and youth after-drug rehab.  Their mission is, "To assist each child with special needs in reaching their full potential through interaction with horses."  They also provide "A kind, rewarding home for older show horses and ponies, loving care, and provide proper burial on their ranch when they pass on."  To learn more about their beneficial programs to our community, visit their web site.

You know what I loved most about this shoot besides the model and subject matter?  Working with my friends and community to make magic happen.  I borrowed an iron from my neighbor, a hat from my friend Natasha and Bethany's grandmother's fur stoal.  It was so special in every way.  To top it all off, my prayers to the weather gods helped ... it was the warmest day in February, a whopping 46 degrees.  We didn't mind dodging a few rain drops.  It was a wonderful way to spend Superbowl Sunday outdoors enjoying the company of friends, horses and nature, while most people would be indoors.  I'd much rather be outdoors.  Nature is my studio.  Thanks to everyone for making this happen!
